Solid Waste and Recycling Update

Megan Clere Abrams, Solid Waste Coordinator for Campbell County, gave a detailed look at the many programs the county offers all year long.

Free Drop-Off Recycling. Campbell County provides free drop-off recycling at six locations, with 20 bins picked up by Rumpke several times each week. The county is also part of a new pilot program with Rumpke and Hefty ReNew that lets residents recycle hard-to-recycle items such as chip bags, plastic wrap, foam containers, and plastic utensils. Residents can pick up a free starter kit to take part.

New Online Recycling Search Tool. Through a recycling grant, the county has launched a new search tool on the Campbell County website that helps residents quickly look up the right way to recycle or throw away more than 240 items. There is also a waste sorting game built for students, but fun for all ages. Since the tool launched, it has had nearly 3,000 material views and almost 2,000 user sessions.

A Look at 2025 by the Numbers:

Spring and Fall Cleanups picked up 4,331 loads, more than 522 tons of trash, and 43 tons of tires
The Voucher Program, which helps residents pay for dumpster rentals during big cleanups, gave out 673 vouchers (twice as many as the year before) and led to 121 tons of disposal
Reboot Electronics Recycling collected 20,682 pounds of electronics at three drop-off locations open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
Holiday Tree Recycling saved 201 trees, which were placed in Boltz Lake in Grant County to help build fish habitat
Holiday Lights Recycling collected 1,286 pounds during the 2025-2026 season

Scrap Metal Recycling at the Campbell County Road Department, Monday through Friday from 8 in the morning to 2 in the afternoon (accepted items include refrigerators, freezers, ovens, washing machines, lawnmowers, grills, and more)
Reboot Electronics Recycling at Pendery Park in Melbourne, Campbell Fire and Rescue in Alexandria, and the Campbell County Public Library in Cold Spring
School Vape Recycling, in partnership with the Northern Kentucky Health Department
Free Latex Paint Hardener Program for residents with latex, acrylic, or water-based paint

Save the Date for 2026 Events:

Trash for Cash (a program that pays residents to clean up litter): March 1 through October 31
Spring Cleanup: May 8 and 9
Ohio River Sweep: June 13
Fall Cleanup: October 9 and 10
Holiday Lights Recycling: December 1 through February 1
Holiday Tree Recycling: December 26 through January

Northern Kentucky Office of Drug Control Policy

Amanda Peters, Director of the Northern Kentucky Office of Drug Control Policy, shared the resources her office offers to help individuals, families, and first responders across our region.

Northern Kentucky Helpline: A free, confidential helpline open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Trained staff connect callers with treatment for substance use and mental health, recovery and reentry support, Narcan (a medicine that can reverse an opioid overdose), Casey's Law information, and even rides to treatment through Uber Health. CARES Program: A community program that helps connect people who have been affected by substance use with the help they need.
Police Social Worker Program: A program that places trained social workers alongside local police departments. The social workers help connect people with mental health care, addiction treatment, housing, and other community services.

These programs work together to support residents who are struggling, as well as the families and first responders who walk alongside them.
